Update: Strathcona County’s Municipal Development Plan

Posted by: Roxanne Carr

Council has an opportunity to finalize the Municipal Development Plan at its first council meeting in September. This new MDP was started by the previous Council and I have been proud to have led the latest discussions as it comes to its final stages.

Strathcona County’s Municipal Development Plan is a massive overarching document that lays out the policies and guidelines for orderly growth and development in the county over the next 20 years and beyond. The Municipal Development Plan provides a comprehensive long term land use policy framework within which present and projected growth and development may take place.

The first reading of the updated Municipal Development Plan was approved by Council on June 13, 2017. Council held a public hearing on this date, prior to Council’s consideration of first reading. As required by the Capital Region Board, after receiving first reading, the County submitted the new Municipal Development Plan to the Capital Region Board for Regional Evaluation. This was one of my proudest moments as Mayor to finally see this document reach its final stages.

On July 19, 2017 the proposed new Municipal Development Plan received approval from the Capital Region Board. All documentation and the approval letter is available to review on the Capital Region Board website. You can also find more information here.

Second and third reading of the proposed new Municipal Development Plan are scheduled for the Council meeting on September 5, 2017. I’m excited to bring the hard work of so many minds, hearts, and hands to the community.

Update: On September 5, Council gave third and final reading to Bylaw 20-2017 to provide a comprehensive land use policy framework. This will guide future development and growth in the County for the next 20 years.
