Sherwood Park Minor Softball Association Hosts Provincials
What a great turnout last weekend for the Sherwood Park Minor Softball Association, their players and supporters. Athletes and audience were saluted in the opening ceremonies by representatives of the RCMP and a great Bag Piper. Strathcona County was delighted to welcome 42 softball teams from across Alberta and about 3,000 fans to our Centennial Fields.
Each and every player and team should be proud of reaching the provincial championships. They certainly provided the fans with top caliber play and exciting moves. These games meant more than winning medals – players were striving to qualify for the Western and Canadian National Championships taking place at various locations across Canada this summer.
Two Sherwood Park teams won medals on the weekend. The U14 A team won a last inning come from behind thriller to win gold and earn their spot as AB1 at the Western Canadian Championships. With this, coaches and teams will be striving to win back to back Western Canadian Championship in that age group.
The U16 A team won Silver and plans now to travel to the Canadian Nationals in Delta, BC as AB2. This team was our 2016 U14 A Western Canadian Champions - to move up a division and claim second place in U16 is no easy task!
Kudos to the Sherwood Park Minor Softball Association organizers and volunteers who dedicated countless hours to preparing for this outstanding athletic event. Good luck to the athletes in reaching their future goals both on and off the fields.
