Let’s Play Ball … Pickleball That is!!
I recall looking out over the ‘Village tennis courts during the 2014 Canada 55 Plus Games to see a handful of people playing the newest game in Strathcona County: Pickleball.
Enthusiasts said this was a popular trend in Arizona and they knew it would catch on here!
So a legend begins. They must have all read Margaret Mead’s quote... “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.’’ …because that’s what happened. A small but mighty group of people: Wayne, Darrell, Gwen, Jan, Roger, Dennis, Val, June, Toni and Doug had a vision and formed the Strathcona County Pickleball Association.
They told me about their plans, presented to Council and got the Recreation, Parks & Culture department on board. And they did not just ask for money and space – like true community champions they led the charge. They grew their sport by promoting it to all age groups, offered free lessons and became active volunteers. Fundraising began in earnest.
And here we are, July 26, 2017, opening eight brand new Pickleball Courts to add to the other outdoor courts in Village on the Lake, Ardrossan, Cloverbar School and McGhan Park. Thanks to this determined group Strathcona County has over twenty indoor and outdoor courts to keep all ages busy and active throughout the year! Way to go Community-Builders!
